About Canton, North Carolina

Canton is a town of 4,422 people in Haywood County, on both banks of the Pigeon River about 17 miles west of Asheville. Jonathan McPeters was farming beside the river here by 1790, and around 1815 settlers raised the first church, Locust Old Field Baptist Church. In 1825 the Reverend Nehemiah Bonham started Morning Star Church near the future town. Canton itself was founded in 1889 as Buford, renamed Vinson that same year and Pigeon Ford in 1891.

In 1893 it took the name Canton, after Canton, Ohio, where the steel for its bridge over the Pigeon River was made. In 1905 Peter G. Thomson of Champion Coated Paper Company in Hamilton, Ohio, toured Western North Carolina looking for a pulp mill site. He picked Canton for its spruce, its open land and its river, though he later found the river too gentle to float logs and used railroads instead. Work on the mill began in 1906, when the town had just 350 people.

  • Champion's mill opens, 1908The Champion Fibre Company mill opened in 1908 with about 1000 employees. Many local men had farms to tend, so immigrants did much of the building work. The company also built Fibreville, a neighborhood of 60 homes for its workers. Thomson believed people with wealth owed jobs to those who needed them, and in 1906 he began an annual Labor Day celebration that was still held a century later.
  • The workers bought the millWhen Champion's owners moved to close the plant in 1997 over environmental issues, its employees bought it and formed Blue Ridge Paper Company, owning a 45% stake through an employee stock plan. The mill later passed to Evergreen Packaging, which became Pactiv Evergreen in 2020. On March 6, 2023, Pactiv Evergreen said it would shut the mill that summer, affecting 1,100 workers. Papertown, a documentary about the closing, premiered in Canton in May 2026.
  • Floods on the PigeonTropical Storm Fred sent the Pigeon River into town on August 17, 2021, and as of June 2022 many buildings near the river still could not be used. Hurricane Helene brought even worse flooding in September 2024.
