About Cedar Knolls, New Jersey

Cedar Knolls is an unincorporated community of 4,082 people in Hanover Township, Morris County, with the Whippany River running through its southeast corner. In 1913 Menko H. Wolfe purchased the Charles W. Ford Estate, a tract of 114 acres, and divided it into lots. The Ford family's homestead went by the name The Knolls, and Wolfe added Cedar, most likely because cedars had sprung up across the farm's unused fields.

The W-B Camp and Bungalow Company offered summer homes, camps and bungalow plots on the land. By 1916 it had put up and sold more than 50 bungalows, and 300 people were spending their summers in Cedar Knolls.

  • A station renamed in 1918The nearest train stop on the Morristown and Erie Railroad was called Monroe. Between 1914 and 1916 the bungalow company pressed the railroad to give the stop the new community's name instead. In 1918 the railroad agreed to a change, and the station became Monroe-Cedar Knolls.
  • Firefighters in 1919, mail in 1923As the summer colony grew into a settled place, it began to build its own institutions. The Cedar Knolls Fire Department, Inc. was organized in 1919, and four years later, in 1923, Cedar Knolls got a post office of its own.
