About Chepachet, Rhode Island

In June 1842, followers of Thomas W. Dorr, who led the fight for wider voting rights in Rhode Island, took over Chepachet village, and up to 700 men gathered with cannon. Dorr had already sent his men home when the state militia marched in and took Acote's Hill without a fight. Not long after, the hill became a burying ground, and it grew into the town's main cemetery.

Chepachet grew into a busy commercial and mill center on the Great Country Road and the Chepachet River. By 1800 it had a hat factory and a tannery, the Masonic Hall went up in 1802, and the Brown and Hopkins Store opened in 1809. In 1808 George Harris brought cotton manufacturing to the village with a carding mill by the river bridge.
