About Pascoag, Rhode Island

Pascoag is a village of 4,641 people in Providence County and one of the eight villages that form the town of Burrillville. It grew up where the Pascoag River leaves the Pascoag Reservoir, and the river falls 60 feet on its way through the village, which gave the early mills plenty of power. The name most likely comes from an Algonquian root, since Roger Williams wrote the Nipmuc word for snake as "askug."

Josiah Arnold owned the earliest recorded mill in Pascoag, a grist and saw mill, in 1746. In 1814 Daniel Sayles put up a wooden building to full and dress woolen cloth, and over time the Sayles family came to hold several mills and some fine homes. By 1852 the village, likely counting neighboring Bridgeton, was home to 1,400 people, 500 of whom worked in its eight woolen mills. Textile work stayed the village's main business until after World War II.

  • The Granite Mill of 1865The large Granite Mill went up in 1865 and came to be counted among the handsomest mills in Rhode Island. Pascoag's other mills were lost one by one until the Granite Mill stood alone. Then a string of fires struck it, and the final one, in May 1981, left it heavily damaged.
  • Trains from 1891The Woonsocket and Pascoag Railroad ran trains into the village from 1891 until the 1930s. The line survives, run today by the Providence & Worcester Railroad, but its tracks now end in Slatersville.
  • A setting for LovecraftThe horror writer H. P. Lovecraft placed part of his 1925 story "The Horror at Red Hook" in Pascoag.
  • A $7 million settlementOn September 14, 2001, a test found the gasoline additive MTBE in Pascoag's groundwater at more than 350 parts per billion, though residents said they had noticed it as early as May 2001. The likely source was leaking tanks at a local ExxonMobil station. Nearly 1,500 residents sued the company, and in May 2012 ExxonMobil agreed to a $7 million settlement so the Pascoag Public Utility District could bore new wells.
