About North Smithfield, Rhode Island

North Smithfield is a town of 12,588 people in Providence County, in northern Rhode Island. In 1666 William Minnian, a Native man also called Quashawannamut, deeded about 2,000 acres here to John Mowry and Edward Inman. The two men then split the land with Nathaniel Mowry, John Steere and Thomas Walling, and the English farmers who settled it named their community for Smithfield in London.

A Quaker colony took shape here in the early 18th century and reached south into Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Later, the Branch and Blackstone rivers powered mills in a string of villages that included Slatersville, Forestdale, Branch Village and Union Village. The area belonged to Smithfield until 1871, when it was incorporated as a town of its own named North Smithfield.

  • Slatersville, begun in 1803Samuel Slater and his younger brother John began building Slatersville in 1803 with the Providence firm of Almy and Brown, in what were then Smithfield's northern woods. By 1807 it had a mill, the owner's house, two workers' houses and a company store. A stone mill replaced the first in 1826, a second came in 1843, and the green was laid out in 1838. In 1915 the whole village passed to Henry P. Kendall, who improved much of it.
  • A battle in Mattity SwampIn 1676, during King Philip's War, Connecticut militia caught Queen Quaiapen, the last Narragansett sachem, in Mattity Swamp, inside today's North Smithfield. They killed her and Stonewall John there, in what is called the Second Battle of Nipsachuck.
  • Union Village and its bankStagecoaches on the Great Road between Providence and Worcester stopped at Union Village, which grew a hat shop, taverns and the Smithfield Academy. In 1805 its residents incorporated the Smithfield Union Bank. For a while people called the place Bank Village, and the bank's name is where Union Village comes from.
  • The Peleg Arnold TavernRichard Arnold, one of the area's first settlers, built this tavern around 1690. About a hundred years later his descendant Peleg Arnold made it much larger. Peleg served in the Continental Congress and later led the Rhode Island Supreme Court as chief justice, and during the Revolution the town ran its military affairs from his tavern.
  • Swords for the UnionElisha Bartlett built a scythe and tool mill at Branch Village in 1795. Downriver at Forestdale, the Mansfield and Lamb shop made scythes and tools from 1824, running on water from the Branch River. During the Civil War the same shop turned out swords and sabres for the Union army.
