About Greenville, Rhode Island

Greenville is a village of 9,061 people in the town of Smithfield, in Providence County. It carries the name of Nathanael Greene, the Revolutionary War general born in Rhode Island in 1742, though settlers first came to this spot in the 17th century.

In 1733, when the Putnam Pike was completed, Resolved Waterman opened a tavern at the crossroads here, the earliest one on record in Smithfield. The village grew up around his tavern, the nearby saw and grist mills and an iron works. The grist mill begun by the first Resolved Waterman was still grinding in the nineteenth century, and the village gained an academy in 1813. The old pike is now U.S. Route 44, and it still runs through the center of Greenville.

  • Smithfield's last water powerBuilders raised three textile mills in Greenville during the 1840s. They used the final three spots in all of Smithfield where a stream could still drive a mill wheel, and by 1850 the old tavern crossroads had become a substantial village.
  • A Catholic church in 1858Irish families began settling in Greenville in the 1840s, and a Roman Catholic mission was started to serve them. In 1858 the village's Catholics put up their first church, on Smith Street, a short walk south of the village center.
  • Free Will Baptist countryIn the 19th century many people around Greenville took part in the Free Will Baptist movement, and the Smithville Seminary, a Free Baptist school, stood nearby. The Greenville Baptist Church still serves the village today.
  • Hosiery at MountaindaleMountaindale, one of the villages that share the Greenville name with West Greenville and Spragueville, had a hosiery mill of its own, the Mountain Dale Hosiery Mill, run by its owners J.P. and J.G. Ray. Today it is known for the Mountaindale Reservoir and its beach.
