About Burrillville, Rhode Island

Burrillville is a town of 16,158 people in Providence County, filling the northwest corner of Rhode Island where it touches Connecticut and Massachusetts. English colonists settled here around 1662, when this land still belonged to northern Glocester. Among the earliest settlers were John Smith and the Saulsbury family. On November 17, 1806, the General Assembly gave the people of North Glocester the right to choose their own officers, and the new town picked Joktan Putnam as its first moderator. It took its name from James Burrill Jr., then the state's attorney general, who later became chief justice and a U.S. senator.

Through the 19th century, mills turned this farm country into a string of villages. Harrisville, first called Rhodesville for the privateer Captain William Rhodes, was renamed for the manufacturer Andrew Harris, and Oakland grew around a stone mill near the meeting of the Chepachet and Clear rivers. Pascoag, the main village, had power to spare because its river falls 60 feet on the way through. By the first half of the 18th century a sawmill was running there, and Pascoag later grew into a textile town whose mills kept going until after World War II. Between 1891 and the 1930s, the Woonsocket and Pascoag Railroad served it.

  • A penny arcade since 1930Edmund Reed opened the Spring Lake Arcade next to Spring Lake Beach in 1930, and it is thought to be America's oldest penny arcade business. The building was rebuilt after 1998. About half its games are antiques, some dating to the 1920s, among them rifle ranges, pinball and skee-ball, and it still opens each summer.
  • Moses Taft's 1786 CapeMoses Taft farmed and ran a gristmill on the nearby Clear River. The Cape he owned on East Wallum Lake Road dates from 1786 and shows early Federal building in its five-bay front and large central chimney. After a restoration in the 2000s, the Moses Taft House joined the National Register in 2009.
  • Bridgeton School, 1897George W. Spaulding designed the wood-frame Bridgeton School on Laurel Hill Avenue, and it opened in 1897. Burrillville children studied there until 1966, and it reopened as a kindergarten in 1970. When it closed for good in 1995, the Burrillville Historical and Preservation Society took it over. It is regarded as the town's best preserved schoolhouse from the late 19th century.
  • Pascoag Grammar SchoolPascoag Grammar School went up on Sayles Avenue in 1917 as the town's high school. It later served as an elementary school until 1995, and the building has since been turned into condominiums.
  • A village named for a riverPascoag takes its name from the Pascoag River, which leaves the Pascoag Reservoir at the village. The name probably has an Algonquian root, and Roger Williams wrote down "askug" as the Nipmuc word for snake. In 1925 H. P. Lovecraft set part of his story "The Horror at Red Hook" in Pascoag.
