About Damon, Texas

Damon is a community of 436 people in northwestern Brazoria County, where State Highway 36 meets Farm Road 1462. The town grew up around Damon Mound, a salt dome that lifts out of the flat coastal plain to 144 feet above sea level, the highest ground in the county. Long before Europeans came, the Karankawa people lived on the mound. They left arrowheads, pottery, stone tools and burial grounds, and they believed its sour earth, soured by sulphur close to the surface, could heal the sick.

Samuel Damon came from the United States in 1831 and married Lorena, the oldest daughter of Abraham Darst. The couple built their house on the mound's south slope, and the mound and the town both carry his name. By 1890 the settlement, then called Damon Mound, had 100 people, and cattle ranching drove its business. Its post office reopened in 1895 after three years closed, the name was shortened to Damon around then, and a Baptist church followed in 1896.

  • Oil around the saltThe top of the salt sits about 500 feet down, under layers of limestone, gypsum and anhydrite, and oil collected in the sandstone and limestone around it. By 1924, 85 wells had pumped five million barrels of crude from the mound, and in 1930 alone it gave up 224,000 barrels.
  • A railroad for the quarriesIn 1918 a rail line was built from Rosenberg to Damon to haul off the limestone and sulphur dug from the mound. Service north of Guy ended in 1944, yet Damon held close to 400 people from the 1940s into the 1980s. In 1989 its 375 residents still had a feed store, a cotton gin and a working quarry.
  • High school in Needville since 1949Damon had a school district of its own by 1931, when the town counted 260 people. Today the Damon Independent School District teaches kindergarten through eighth grade, and since a 1949 contract with Needville ISD, Damon's older students have gone on to Needville High School.
  • The Damon family reunionDuring the 1980s the Damon family gathered in Damon every year for its reunion. Many of Samuel and Lorena Damon's descendants still lived near the pioneer homestead on the mound.
