About Republic, Ohio
Republic is a village in Seneca County with 556 residents counted in the 2020 census. Surveyed as a new town in 1834, it was called Republic, while many early settlers knew it as Scipio Center. Rail connections shaped its fortunes, first encouraging trade and later redirecting traffic toward Tiffin.
- Town SurveySidney Smith hired Cincinnati surveyor R.M. Shoemaker in 1834 to lay out the town at the corners of Scipio Township sections 15, 16, 21, and 22.
- Trading CenterA rail line arriving from Sandusky in 1841 helped Republic become a popular center for stores, warehouses, shops, and factories.
- County Seat EffortAfter the Seneca County courthouse burned on May 21, 1841, an unsuccessful effort sought to make Republic the county seat.
- Republic HorrorOn January 4, 1887, the westbound B & O Express No. 5 struck a stalled eastbound freight train head on just west of town.
