About Flat Rock, Ohio

Flat Rock is a community of 227 people in Seneca County, Ohio, in the northeastern part of Thompson Township. It grew up on land that John Harpster, a settler from Pennsylvania, claimed in 1828, and the village itself was platted in 1841.

The village was laid out under the name Lewisville. A post office called Flat Rock opened in 1846, and that name, taken from a flat layer of rock over an artesian aquifer, is the one the village carries today. The post office has stayed open ever since and uses the ZIP code 44828.

  • First claim in 1828John Harpster came from Pennsylvania and in 1828 entered eighty acres on the ground where the village later grew. When the History of Seneca County came out in 1886, he was still alive and living in Clyde.
  • Named for the rockA flat layer of rock over an artesian aquifer gave the village its name. The post office took that name in 1846, five years after the town was platted as Lewisville, and Flat Rock is what the village has been called since.
  • A stop on the Pennsylvania lineBy 1911 the railroad ran through the township, and the county history of that year described Flat Rock as a small stop on the Pennsylvania line, as was Franks.
