About Dayton, Maine

In 1854, the southern part of Hollis asked the state legislature to let it become its own town. The request was granted. The new town was named Dayton in honor of Thomas Day, the man who had submitted the petition.

In 1860, Dayton voted to build a covered bridge 112 feet long at Union Falls, linking the town with Buxton. The Clark Power Company blew up the bridge in 1921. A Portland film company caught the blast on camera for a melodrama.
