About Derwood, Maryland

Derwood is a community of 2,535 people in Montgomery County, just north of Rockville. Its ground was first patented to Ralph Crabbe as a tract of 470 acres known as Deer Park. That name may have shifted to Deer Wood over time, and local speech then wore it down to Derwood.

A post office opened here in 1883. Later that decade the B&O Railroad gave the place a board and batten station, and the stop drew people and business. In August 1888 the community was laid out in a grid of lots, and in the early 1900s a small settlement grew up around the station.

  • A mill by the tracks, 1887In 1887 three partners, Stephen B. Lyddane, Robert Lyddane and Charles B. Jones, put up a flour mill next to the railroad at the northeast corner of Redland Road. Over the years it also made cane molasses and feed for hogs and dairy cows. One of its products, a 16 percent dairy feed, was sold as the way to fill a milk pail.
  • The fire of 1954On June 7, 1954, fire burned the mill and took the Derwood B&O station with it. So few passengers boarded at Derwood that the railroad decided not to rebuild the station.
  • Lake Needwood, 1965In 1965 Rock Creek was dammed to form Lake Needwood, a man-made lake on Derwood's edge.
  • A ZIP code made it biggerIn 1974 the Derwood post office relocated to the Redland Shopping Center but held on to the name Derwood Branch. From then on the whole 20855 ZIP code area counted as Derwood, so the community grew far larger. Shady Grove Metro station opened in 1984 and brought more residents.
  • The Intercounty ConnectorFrom 2009 to 2011, Maryland Route 200, the Intercounty Connector, was built straight through central Derwood, cutting past Cashell Estates and the land near Shady Grove Road.
