About Desert View Highlands, California

Desert View Highlands is a community of 2,676 people in Los Angeles County, up from 2,360 in 2010. It covers just 0.4 square miles of land, and the City of Palmdale surrounds it on every side.

In 1950 Joseph Hunt, a builder, and his wife Ruth bought land beside Tenth Street West and Elizabeth Lake Road. At the time Tenth Street West was nothing more than a trail, and the area had no water, power or other services. Over the next years the Hunts and their partners turned that empty ground into a neighborhood of about 100 homes.

  • Drilling for water firstBefore any houses could go up, Joe Hunt and his partners had to find water, so they began by drilling wells. Their Deep River Water Company then supplied Desert View Highlands, and a man named Jim ran it after he came home from the Navy. In 1962 the partners sold the company to the County Waterworks District, which took over the water service.
  • Homes built at Joe's millHunt kept his construction office half a mile north on Tenth Street West, and he also ran his own mill. Much of the material used in the Desert View homes was cut and shaped there, which let the builders work on a trail far from any lumberyard.
  • Sunday services in the millThe local Methodist congregation worshiped in Hunt's mill before it had a church building of its own. Workers covered the saws and the stacks of lumber, then set out rugs, chairs and an altar. Once the service ended, the room went back to work as a carpenter mill.
