About Dublin, California

Dublin is a city of 72,589 people in Alameda County, in the Amador Valley of the Tri-Valley region. In 1835 JosΓ© MarΓa Amador received 16,500 acres as a reward for serving as a Mexican soldier and an administrator at Mission San Jose, and the valley still carries his name. In 1850 a group of Irish settlers purchased land from Amador and laid out a town. So many Irish lived here that the post office took the name Dublin in the 1890s.

The place was first known as Alamilla Springs, for a spring near where Dublin Boulevard and Dougherty Road meet today. That road later became part of the Lincoln Highway and then U.S. Route 50. Dublin stayed rural until 1960, when the first housing tracts went up in West Dublin. It kept growing as a place to live and shop, and it incorporated as a city in February 1982.

  • Old St. Raymond's, 1859Old St. Raymond's Church was built in 1859 and is the oldest Catholic church still standing in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. It remains on its original site as one of the earliest wood churches in Alameda County, and it joined the National Register in 2006.
  • A schoolhouse and a storeThe Murray Schoolhouse opened in 1856 with 50 pupils, and Green's Store followed in 1860. A congregation, the Dublin Church of Christ, now meets in the old store. Burials in the churchyard had begun before the Dublin Pioneer Cemetery became official in 1859. All of these sit where Donlon Way, once the north end of the road to Sunol and Niles Canyon, crosses Dublin Boulevard.
  • A stray cannonball in 2011On December 6, 2011, a cannonball fired while MythBusters was filming at Camp Parks flew through a nearby house and came to rest in a car. No one was hurt. Adam Savage and Kari Byron later thanked the town with a student engineering event at Dublin High School, and the Dublin Film Commission turned December 6 into a yearly film festival day. The first one, on December 6, 2012, handed out Golden Cannonball Awards at the Dublin Library.
  • Saint Patrick's Day weekendDublin marks its Irish name every Saint Patrick's Day with a parade sponsored by the Rotary Club, a 5K run and walk, a pancake breakfast put on by the firefighters and a two-day festival. The festival moved from Shamrock Village to the Civic Center on Dublin Boulevard in 2007, putting it closer to the growing east side of the city.
