About Duncan, South Carolina

Duncan is a town of 4,041 people in Spartanburg County, between Spartanburg and Greenville. It began in 1811 as a small settlement around a post office on the road that is now S.C. Highway 290, and both the office and the community took the name New Hope. In 1854 the town was renamed Vernonville, or Vernonsville, to honor J.J. Vernon, a doctor who practiced there.

Plans to run a railroad through town were made in the mid-1850s, but the coming of the Civil War stopped them, so the Atlanta and Richmond Railroad did not lay its tracks here until 1873. Leroy Duncan had arrived after the war and bought land. While the town celebrated its new line, he offered to give land for streets if people would take his name, and the change became official in 1881.

  • Chartered in 1889Within two years of taking the Duncan name, the town had 200 people. Several general stores served them, along with saw and flour mills and a cotton gin, and Duncan received its town charter in 1889.
  • The Hughes Hotel, 1892The Hughes Hotel opened in 1892 and became the center of town life, drawing travelers off the road between Greenville and Spartanburg.
  • A school for Black childrenIn 1881, the same year the town took its new name, Duncan's Black children got a school of their own, the Rock Hill Negro School. It holds a place in the African-American history of Spartanburg County.
  • Cryovac research since 1963In 1963 Grace and Company built a research center in Duncan, where it worked on flexible packaging sold as Cryovac. Industry still anchors the town: Staubli's, Röchling Group and Dräxlmaier Group all keep their North American headquarters here.
