About Wellford, South Carolina
Wellford is a city of 3,293 people in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. A railroad builder named Wellington founded the town in 1840 while he was laying track through the area, and he stayed on and called the place Wellington. When the town received its charter on December 9, 1882, it took the name Wellford instead.
“Fort Prince, approximately a mile and a half from Wellfordβs future location, provided early settlers with protection from Native Americans and British during the Revolutionary War.”
- The old Thompson placeJoseph Thompson's branch of the family reached Carolina before the Revolution. He settled where the Tyger rivers fork, near present Wellford, and his homestead stood on the old Cowpens furnace road, which ran from the furnace to Greenville. His son Alexander, born in 1768, went on living at the homestead after his father died.
- A sergeant in 1861James S. Ballenger, born December 13, 1835, grew up mostly on his father's farm near Wellford and went to school in the neighborhood. When the Civil War began, he joined the Morgan Light Infantry as a sergeant. The company was mustered in on April 13, 1861, as part of the 5th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers.
