About Startex, South Carolina
The area was first called Tucapau, after the mill built there in 1896. Walter Montgomery Sr. purchased the mill in 1936 and gave it the name Startex. The new name came from the brand of household textiles made at the plant. The mill closed in 1998 and was mostly taken down in 1999.
