About Fairfield University, Connecticut
Fairfield University is a census-designated place of 2,884 people in the town of Fairfield, drawn around the campus of a Jesuit university. In 1941 James H. Dolan, head of the Jesuits' New England Province, got written permission from Bishop Maurice F. McAuliffe of Hartford to open a Jesuit high school and college in southwestern Connecticut. The next year the Jesuits bought two neighboring estates off North Benson Road, owned by the Brewster Jennings and Walter Lashar families, and the new school became the 26th Jesuit college in the country.
John J. McEleney served as the first president, and Dolan himself took over in 1944. Connecticut gave the university a charter to grant degrees in 1945, and in 1947 the College of Arts and Sciences opened its doors to 303 male students. Those young men graduated in 1951, and in 1970 the university admitted its first undergraduate women.
- Three old estate housesThe 200-acre campus grew up around the manor houses of the estates the Jesuits bought. The Lashars' Hearthstone Hall, built in 1921, became Bellarmine Hall, the main administration building, named for the Jesuit saint Robert Bellarmine. O.G. Jennings' Mailands, from 1896, became McAuliffe Hall, for the bishop who approved the school, and Lawrence Jennings' Larribee became David J. Dolan House.
- A case before the Supreme CourtFairfield and three other Connecticut religious colleges had taken federal building grants from the Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963, and opponents sued, saying the money broke the First Amendment's Establishment Clause. In Tilton v. Richardson the plaintiffs lost, with the Supreme Court denying their appeal on June 28, 1971. The federal money helped pay for the Nyselius Library of 1968 and the Bannow Science Center of 1971.
- A gift from StamfordGustav and Dagmar Nyselius, Swedish immigrants living in Stamford, gave money to the university, and the library that opened in 1968 carried their name. After a large renovation and expansion in 2001, it was renamed the DiMenna-Nyselius Library for a gift from Joseph A. DiMenna Jr., one of the university's own graduates.
- Twenty-five years under KelleyAloysius P. Kelley became the seventh president in 1979 and led the school for 25 years, longer than anyone else. Dozens of buildings and many new programs went up in his time, and the endowment rose from under $2 million to $131 million by 2003. In October 2006 the university opened a welcome and office building in the middle of campus and named it for him.
