About Staples, Connecticut

Staples is a community of 6,954 people on the east side of Westport, in Fairfield County. Its lines run from Compo Road east to the Fairfield town line, and from the Post Road north to Cross Highway. Westport became a town on May 28, 1835, formed from pieces of Fairfield, Weston and Norwalk.

For several decades after that, Westport lived by farming and stood out as the leading onion center in the United States. Blight finally ruined the onion crop, and mills and factories took over from farming as the town's main source of work.

  • Horace Staples's high schoolHorace Staples gave the land for Westport's first high school and paid for it with his own money. He hired Wilbur Cross, who later became governor, as one of its first principals. The original building stood on Riverside Avenue and is gone now, but the school lives on: in 1957 Staples High School moved across town to North Avenue, and it is Westport's only public high school.
  • Wakeman's farm since 1908Joseph Meeker and then his son Augustus owned a farm on Cross Highway. About 1900 the Meekers moved a carriage barn from the north side of the road and turned it into a farmhouse. In 1908 John Wakeman bought the farm from Mary Meeker and raised dairy cows and onions on fields on both sides of the highway. The family quit onions by 1920 and sold the cows after World War II, then about 1960 switched from chickens to vegetables.
