About Westport Village, Connecticut
Westport Village is the town center of Westport, Connecticut, and the 2020 census counted 3,251 people here. Settlement began in the second half of the 1700s, and the village that grew up beside the Saugatuck River took the river's name. Saugatuck became a busy trading place, with ships and grain moving through its riverfront.
- Jesup's wharves in 1790Ebenezer Jesup was a great-grandson of one of the settlers of Green's Farms. In 1790 he put up a wharf and warehouses on the Saugatuck River's east bank, close to where the Post Road Bridge crosses today, and many more wharves followed his. Jesup went on to become Connecticut's most successful grain dealer and the richest man in Saugatuck.
- Westport since 1835As Saugatuck's business grew, its residents wanted a self-governing town of their own, pieced together from parts of Norwalk, Fairfield and Weston. Their petition succeeded on May 28, 1835, when the State of Connecticut approved the new town, just over 22 square miles in size, and incorporated it as Westport. The old river village became the center of the new town.
