About Old Hill, Connecticut
Old Hill is a community of 2,676 people in the town of Westport, Fairfield County, with the city of Norwalk along its western edge. It was first listed as a census-designated place before the 2020 census, but its oldest houses date from the eighteenth century, when the village around Old Hill Road was known as Taylortown.
- Taylortown in 1730So many members of the Taylor family settled here that the village first carried their name. In 1730 John Taylor built a house on Old Hill Road, and it stands at the center of today's Kings Highway North Historic District. As the French and Indian War was drawing to a close, Seth Taylor laid out a drill ground where the local militia trained.
- King Street, laid out in 1672Colonial governors in New York and Connecticut wanted a road that would carry news and travelers between New York and Boston. Its route was laid out in 1672 and first called King Street, later the Old Kings Highway, and the eighteenth-century village grew up along it.
- Cannon in the burying groundIn the Revolutionary War, Benedict Arnold led Norwalk militiamen who placed cannon in the King Street Cemetery, the village's old burying ground. They meant to strike the British on their way back from the raid on Danbury, at the nearby Saugatuck River ford. A Tory sympathizer warned the British commander, so his troops crossed the river farther upstream and the ambush failed.
