About Fultondale, Alabama

Fultondale is a city of 9,876 people in Jefferson County, just north of Birmingham. It grew from three separate communities: Lewisburg, Glendale and Fulton Springs. Bartholomew Boyle bought 2,000 acres here during the 1870s and opened coal mines that he named Mary Lee, after his daughter. Railroads laid in the 1890s linked the mines to Birmingham's growing steel district, and in 1899 the Alabama Consolidated Coal Company bought them.

A small settlement grew up where the only road to Birmingham ended, and its shops mostly served the miners. Electricity reached the area in the 1920s, but by the 1940s the coal was running out. In 1947 Fulton Springs and Glendale joined and incorporated as one city, with a name built from both of theirs, and Fultondale built its first city hall that same year.

  • A stop on U.S. 31Before Interstate 65, drivers heading between Birmingham and Nashville came right through town on U.S. Highway 31. Hotels such as the Keystone Lodge and the Buchmann Motor Inn did well, and by the 1950s the Skyview drive-in theater stood on the city's southern edge. Once I-65 opened, travelers could pass Fultondale by, and the town's business suffered. Much of the old highway route survives today as Stouts Road.
  • Black Creek Bridge, c. 1926The old bridge over Black Creek dates to about 1926, and the state has placed it on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Today Black Creek Park surrounds it, and a nature trail of about three miles, built on an old rail line, follows the creek and crosses historic Stouts Road.
  • Struck twice by tornadoesOn April 27, 2011, the tornado outbreak that killed more than 350 people across the Southeast damaged or wrecked many buildings in Fultondale. On January 25, 2021, an EF3 tornado hit the city, heavily damaging or destroying homes, vehicles and businesses. One person died and 30 were hurt.
  • Founders Day in AugustEach August the city holds a Founders Day celebration, where vendors sell food and crafts, bands play live and a car show draws a crowd. The Fultondale Bark Park in Black Creek Park hosts its own yearly event, the Barking at the Moon Festival.
