About Center Point, Alabama

Center Point is a city of 16,406 people in northeastern Jefferson County, part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Around 1816 the Reed family moved here from North Carolina and began farming, about the same time other families were settling Trussville, Springville, Clay and Pinson. In 1871 Dave Franklin put up a log cabin, the first home inside today's city limits.

By the early twentieth century the farm settlement had a post office and a blacksmith's shop, but it stayed small for decades. Then a steady water supply was found in 1947, and families moving east out of Birmingham soon arrived. More than 80% of the homes inside today's city limits went up between 1960 and 1970, and by 1967 Center Point was called the nation's largest unincorporated community, home to 64,000 people.

  • The Rock School of 1924Builders used stone gathered from the surrounding area for the elementary school they put up in 1924, and people came to call it the Rock School. After Center Point became a city, the old school building was given a new job as City Hall.
  • A city since March 2002After several years of study and public meetings, Center Point incorporated in March 2002, in part so its residents could control their own future and stop Birmingham from annexing more of the area. The first city elections followed in April.
  • Erwin High School in 1965For decades Center Point students went to Hewitt-Trussville High School in nearby Trussville. The building boom of the 1960s filled that school past capacity, so Jefferson County Schools opened E.B. Erwin High School for the community in 1965.
  • Festival of the SpringsEvery April the city holds the Festival of the Springs in Reed-Harvey Park, where visitors find live music, things to eat, handmade arts and crafts, and games for kids. Each spring it also hosts a Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt with concessions and prizes.
