Geography Worth Displaying
This map was created using accurate cartographic data and authoritative geographic sources, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the Census Bureau. The map brings together terrain, waterways, roads, and building detail. The majority of the streets are labeled, houses are accurately depicted, and the topography is derived from government sources. Combining local data with carefully composed color and shading leads to this beautifully detailed Clay artwork for your wall.
Rather than simply showing street outlines, weβve included as many of the street names as we could reasonably fit on the map while keeping their names legible. Zoom in on the high resolution preview to see exactly whatβs on the map. We truly set out to create a statement piece for anyone who loves Clay. So whether itβs for you, or a gift for someone you love, we hope this map of Clay brings back fond memories.
About Clay, Alabama
Clay is a city of 10,291 people in northeastern Jefferson County. Its first settlers who were not Native American came around 1806, and the community they built was first called Shiloh's Beat, after a Methodist church nearby. It grew up on the Georgia Road, a main route that linked the Carolinas with Birmingham.
A post office opened here in 1878, and the story goes that its first postmaster named it for the red clay soil found all over the area, so the town became Clay. For many years the community had no city government of its own, and the census counted it as a census-designated place. Residents voted in June 2000 to incorporate so they could have more control over their own community, and Clay became a city on June 6, 2000. Neighboring Chalkville later joined it.
- The county's oldest churchMount Calvary Presbyterian Church, in Clay, is the oldest church in Jefferson County. Scots-American settlers founded its congregation in 1806, and it has gathered without a break ever since.
- The Alabama CavernsClay became known for the Alabama Caverns, which people also called McCluney's Cave and Crystal Cave. Visitors toured it for years, until it was closed to the public in the 1960s. Cosby Lake was another place that brought tourists to Clay.
- Clay May DaysEach spring the city holds Clay May Days, with arts and crafts vendors, carnival rides and music, and every year it puts on a Christmas Parade. Clay also keeps three city parks with athletic fields, picnic areas, a walking trail and fishing.
