About Springville, Alabama

Springville is a city of 4,786 people in St. Clair County. Its freshwater springs made this spot a favorite resting place for Native Americans and for settlers passing through, and the place was first known as Big Springs. Families began to settle here for good in the mid-1810s. The first post office opened in 1833 under the name Pinkhill, and in December 1834 the town took the name Springville, after the springs.

The Alabama Great Southern Railway reached town in 1870, but cholera broke out at the same moment and killed many of the men building the line. Springville was incorporated in December 1880. Telephones arrived in 1912, Alabama Power brought electricity in 1925, and the town's own water and sewer system began running in 1935.

  • A church from 1817The congregation that became First Baptist Church of Springville organized on March 22, 1817, chartered at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Sion Blythe, one of its charter members, was its first pastor and served for 17 years. Before the turn of the century the Presbyterians and Methodists also held services in its building. It became Springville Baptist in 1877 and took its present name in 1974, and it is the oldest church in the St. Clair Association.
  • An academy for boys and girlsIn 1861 Springville built an academy that taught both male and female students. In 1873 the school was renamed Springville High School.
  • The propane fire of 1969On January 16, 1969, a train hauling propane tanks jumped the track at the Springville Depot and slammed into more propane tanks, which blew up. Firefighters came from as far away as Birmingham, and the National Guard joined them to fight the fire. The blast badly damaged the town, but nobody died, and Springville rebuilt.
  • A cast-iron storefrontNo other building in St. Clair County has a front made of cast iron like the Presley Store's. It joined the National Register in 1983.
  • The spring in Big Spring ParkBig Spring Park, one of the city's three parks, has a small lake fed by the spring that gave Springville its name.
