About Odenville, Alabama

Odenville is a city of 4,969 people in St. Clair County, in north-central Alabama. The Hardin family arrived on the spot in 1824 and opened a blacksmith and cabinet-making business, so the settlement was first known as Hardin's Shop. When a post office opened in 1874, the place took the name Odenville, most likely from a local family. Farms around it raised cotton and produce, and a cotton gin went up in the early 1890s.

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad started laying track through town in 1901 and finished the line in 1905. A bank opened in 1908, and telephones arrived around 1912. Residents tried to incorporate in 1910 and failed, then succeeded in 1914. In 2007 Odenville annexed the town of Branchville.

  • St. Clair County's first high schoolIn 1908 the county chose Odenville as the site of its first high school, and the building was finished by 1909. Students who lived too far away to travel every day boarded at a hotel in town. Classes met there until 1962, when the building was condemned and a new school took its place. A monument carved with the names of the county leaders who built it stands in front of today's Odenville Middle School.
  • Jim Hardin's school bellOdenville's first school, Walnut Grove, was a one-room log building put up around 1864 near today's Pennington Garage and warmed by a fireplace. Later Jim Hardin and Thay Bayer started the first public Odenville School in a wooden building, which burned in 1907, and classes met in churches until a new school was built. Hardin's bell survives in the Fortson Museum, next door to the Odenville Public Library.
  • The Ash graves at LibertyIn 1817 John and Margaret Ash were traveling west from Georgia by wagon train when their daughter Betsy Ann, three, fell from the wagon and died in Beaver Valley. The family stayed near her grave, and Ashville, incorporated in 1822, was named for John. Margaret's father, the Rev. Thomas Newton, was the Presbyterian pastor at Liberty Cemetery in Odenville. Margaret died in 1855 and John in 1872, and both are buried there.
