About Argo, Alabama
Argo is a city of 4,368 people, most of them in St. Clair County, with a smaller part of the city reaching into Jefferson County. Settlers were living here as early as 1818, the year St. Clair County was formed, and the community grew up along the Old Georgia Road, the route now known as U.S. Highway 11.
The railroad reached the town in 1871, probably on the Great Southern line that was later folded into the Norfolk Southern. Today Interstate 59 and U.S. Highway 11 both cross Argo on the same southwest to northeast line.
- Massey's mill and ginIn the 1880s James R. Massey ran several of Argo's businesses at once. He ground grain at his grist mill, ginned cotton and kept a blacksmith shop.
- Incorporated in 1987Argo became an incorporated town in February 1987, and that April its voters chose the first town officials. It is now a city with a mayor and city council.
- A park and a senior centerThe city keeps one park, with a children's area, a pavilion and a running track that offers several levels of difficulty. Argo also runs a Senior Center.
