About Glastonbury Center, Connecticut
Glastonbury Center is the densely settled heart of the town of Glastonbury, with 8,459 people at the 2020 census, close to the Connecticut River's east bank in Hartford County. This ground first belonged to Wethersfield, a town settled in 1634 with its center across the river, and families were already farming the east-bank meadows by the 1650s.
Near the close of that century those farm families petitioned Connecticut's General Court to let them form a separate town, since crossing the river to attend church in Wethersfield was a real hardship. Once Glastonbury stood on its own, one of its first projects was a house at 1808 Main Street, built to draw the Reverend Timothy Stevens, who came to serve as minister in 1695.
- The Kimberly MansionThe Smith sisters' father bought a farm once owned by Eleazer Kimberly, who served in the colony's early years as its Secretary. His daughters, Abby and Julia Smith, were born in the old Kimberly Mansion at 1625 Main Street and spent most of their lives there. The farm was the most valuable property in Glastonbury, and the house is now on the National Register.
- Seven cows for $101.39In November 1873 the town raised the sisters' assessment, and two widows' too, while no man's taxes rose. They refused to pay until they had a say in how the money was spent. Two months later collector George C. Andrews seized seven of their Alderney cows for auction over $101.39 in taxes. The sisters became famous nationwide and won in court in June 1876. They never got the vote, but their property was left alone afterward.
- Birthplace of Gideon WellesGideon Welles, who helped found the Republican Party and later ran the Navy as a member of Lincoln's cabinet, was born in the house at 17 Hebron Avenue that now carries his name. The Gideon Welles House is on the National Register.
