About Guilford Center, Connecticut

Guilford Center is the old heart of the town of Guilford, home to 2,586 people on Long Island Sound between the West River and East Creek. Henry Whitfield, a Puritan minister, brought about 40 English families to this shore in 1639. They bought the land from the Menunkatuck people, founded the town and laid out a large central green modeled on the one at New Haven.

For the next three centuries Guilford lived mostly by farming and fishing, with a short boom in shipbuilding in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Because little industry ever came, the center grew slowly, and only the railroad tracks of the late 19th century and the modern Route 1 cut into it. In 1976 the whole center, with more than 600 historic structures across about four square miles, joined the National Register as the Guilford Historic Town Center.

  • A stone fort from 1639Work on Henry Whitfield's stone house began in 1639, and the settlers built it to double as a fort for their protection. As the town's first minister, Whitfield held Congregationalist services inside until the first meeting house went up. It is Connecticut's oldest house, no stone house in New England is older, and today it holds the Henry Whitfield State Museum.
  • A green kept since 1639The settlers laid out the green in 1639, and its shape has barely changed since. Shops, public buildings and churches from many different centuries line its edges. The Congregational church at the north end dates to 1829, and the town hall on the east side, built in the late 19th century, lost its Romanesque features when it was heavily altered in the 1940s.
  • Salt marshes at the edgesAlong East Creek and the West River, the eastern and western edges of the old town center, salt marshes still line the banks. They recall the farming that supported Guilford for most of its history.
