About Heritage Village, Connecticut

Heritage Village is a community of 5,091 people within Southbury, a New Haven County town. Three brothers who headed the Paparazzo Development Corp. built it as a retirement community, and their company served as both owner and general contractor. In December 1967, Progressive Architecture magazine called it the largest retirement condominium in New England.

  • Once Victor Borge's estateA large share of the acreage had been Victor Borge's estate before the Paparazzo brothers turned it into Heritage Village.
  • Designed by Charles Warren CallisterThe brothers worked with the architect Charles Warren Callister, who traveled from his offices in California to work on the site. He gave the houses vertical cedar siding and cedar shingle roofs, a relaxed version of the farm buildings of rural New England.
  • Almost 300 more acresThe first plan covered 700 acres. So that the houses could sit farther apart and the grounds could stay open and uncrowded, the Paparazzos agreed to enlarge the community by almost 300 acres.
