About Sandy Hook, Connecticut
Sandy Hook is a village of 9,114 people in the town of Newtown, founded in 1711. That year several Newtown proprietors who owned land here moved out together, so that none of them would live alone. The fast Pootatuck River could turn saw and grist mills, and that made Sandy Hook one of the first outlying parts of Newtown to be settled.
A gristmill built on the river in 1712 kept grinding until 1845. Long before electricity, the river's power drew a cluster of mills and shops to Sandy Hook Center, and hat making thrived there while nearly everyone wore hats. Town historian Daniel Cruson has said Sandy Hook was always its own village, though it remained part of Newtown.
- Goodyear's rubber on Glen RoadCharles Goodyear discovered vulcanization in 1839 while living on Glen Road, north of the village center. Around 1850 his brother-in-law, Josiah Tomlinson, started the Goodyear Rubber Packing Company at a mill site on the Pootatuck along that road. The company failed in 1856, and that same year the site went to New York Belting and Packing, turning out belts for power machinery, packing for steam joints and fire hose made of rubber and cotton duck.
- Fire hose until 1977In 1901 the Fabric Fire Hose Company moved into the old rubber works, renting its space from New York Belting and Packing. It went on making fire hose in the Glen Road factory for more than seventy years, until 1977.
- James Thurber's farmhouseEarly in the Depression, the writer and cartoonist James Thurber and his wife moved into an old Georgian farmhouse at 71 Riverside Road. There he wrote My Life and Hard Times and dated its preface Sandy Hook. His biographer Harrison Kinney found seven of his comic essays for The New Yorker set in the house, and falling apples and a neighbor's sheep crept into his letters. The Sanford-Curtis-Thurber House joined the National Register in 2007.
- A church moved in 1972The Newtown United Methodist Church was organized for Newtown's Methodists in the 1850s. In 1972 the congregation moved it to its present spot in the center of Sandy Hook.
