About East Village, Connecticut
East Village is a census-designated place of 4,057 people at the northeastern corner of Monroe, in Fairfield County, where the land runs down to the Housatonic River across from Oxford. Shelton lies to the southeast and Newtown to the northwest, and Walnut Street marks its southwestern edge.
French cavalry rode through here in 1781 on the march that ended in victory at Yorktown. A decade later, in the early 1790s, Methodist preaching came to these hills, and by 1811 the village had a Methodist meetinghouse that still stands today.
- A French ball in 1781Lauzun's French horsemen made camp just south of Monroe's village center on their way across Connecticut. Their hosts at the Daniel Basset House, a home on the Monroe Turnpike, gave a ball for them on June 30, 1781. It turned out to be the final party for Lauzun and his men, because on July 1 they struck camp and rejoined the rest of the army headed for Yorktown.
- Jesse Lee in the 1790sBack when this area was still called New Stratford, the traveling Methodist preacher Jesse Lee came through in the early 1790s and spoke many times in the East Village schoolhouse. One of the people who joined the new faith was John Wilcoxson, a local farmer and businessman.
- Connecticut's oldest Methodist churchIn 1811 Wilcoxson gave land, diagonally across the road from the schoolhouse, to the Methodists of New Stratford's eastern district, and a meetinghouse was raised there. No older Methodist church building survives anywhere in Connecticut. In 1974 the Methodist conference handed it over to the Monroe Historical Society, which paid for its restoration with concerts, flea markets, antique shows and donations, bringing back its plain original look.
