About Stepney, Connecticut
Stepney is a district of 4,280 people in the town of Monroe. It covers about 8 square miles along Route 25, from the Trumbull line north to the Newtown line. Farm families from Fairfield and Stratford, settlements to the south, first settled the land around 1720, and the name Stepney appears in Monroe land records by the 1730s, though no one knows where it came from.
In the early 19th century, travelers between Danbury and the Bridgeport area passed through on Hattertown Road and on the Bridgeport and Newtown Turnpike, which was Monroe's first paved road. In 1817 the town reserved a parade ground for the public, and that ground is now Stepney Green. The Housatonic Railroad opened in 1840 with a depot here, and where road and rail met, the village grew into one of Monroe's leading business and population centers.
- The grandest store in MonroeBirdsey's Plain, now called Upper Stepney, had an inn, a smithy, a livery stable, cobbler shops and no fewer than two general stores. Its hub was Burr Hawley's store, built about 1870. Through the 19th century and into the early 20th it served as the shopping center for western Monroe, and it was the grandest store anywhere in town.
- A saltbox from 1755The Thomas Hawley House is a classic Connecticut saltbox, traditionally dated to 1755. Thomas's grandfather, Joseph Hawley, was among the original settlers of Stratford. Thomas's son David inherited the house, and David's descendants kept living on the homestead into the 20th century. Few houses that old survive in the back country of northeastern Fairfield County, and this is one of them.
- Monroe's first fire companyThe Stepney Volunteer Fire Department was the first fire department in the town of Monroe. Today the district keeps more than a dozen historic buildings put up before the 20th century, while most of its businesses line the Route 25 corridor.
