About Tashua, Connecticut
Tashua is a community of 3,857 people in the northwestern corner of Trumbull, Connecticut. Its land takes in Tawtashua Hill, where John Mallette bought a large tract in the early 1700s. Mallette was a French Huguenot who appears in the land records as a shipwright, and he also worked as a merchant. Around 1740 he gave 230 acres of the Tashua land to his two eldest sons, John and David, and they became the first Malletts to make their homes in Trumbull.
- Mallett homes for 200 yearsThe descendants of John and David Mallett stayed in Tashua and kept building houses here for two centuries. By 1867 the family owned 13 of the district's 36 homes. One of them, the David Mallett Jr. House, joined the National Register in 1986.
- A parish founded around 1760Tashua's Anglicans formed a parish around 1760 and put up their first church, a plain building 36 by 26 feet, beside the burial ground. A second church took its place, and in 1795 Samuel Seabury, America's first Episcopal bishop, came to consecrate it.
- Trumbull's oldest church, 1846The congregation built its third church, Christ Episcopal Church, in 1846. It still stands, and no older house of worship survives anywhere in Trumbull. The church and the Tashua Burial Ground beside it joined the National Register together in 2001.
