About Largo, Maryland

Largo is a census-designated place of 11,605 people in Prince George's County, just east of the Capital Beltway. It takes its name from Largo Plantation, which belonged to the Beall family and was probably named for Largo Bay in Scotland. The Bealls sold the plantation to John Contee in 1745.

In the 1990s the county government bought and leased property in Largo and moved many of its offices here, though the county seat stayed in Upper Marlboro. Late in 2004 the Washington Metro opened Downtown Largo station, where both the Blue Line and the Silver Line end their runs to the east. In 2015 County Executive Rushern Baker said he wanted the seat moved to Largo for its central location and Metro access, but a spokesperson for Senate President Mike Miller opposed the idea, and the seat remains in Upper Marlboro.

  • Washington's stepson at schoolIn the middle of the eighteenth century Enoch Magruder owned this ground, part of the old Largo tract, and the Reverend Jonathan Boucher leased his house to run a school. The best known student there was John Parke Custis, called Jacky, whose stepfather George Washington wrote in his diary about several visits to Castle Magruder while the boy studied there.
  • County records hidden in 1814When the British invaded Washington in the summer of 1814, Prince George's County's records were taken out of Upper Marlboro before the soldiers arrived. They were kept safe at the home of Dennis Magruder at Mount Lubentia.
  • Mount Lubentia, built in 1798Dennis Magruder put up a two-story brick house on the land in 1798, and the Federal Direct Tax of that year recorded it. In 1832 he deeded the place to his son, Dennis Magruder Jr., when the younger man married. Around then the plantation took the name Mount Lubentia, from a Latin word meaning delight.
  • A college for the countyLargo is home to Prince George's Community College, which serves a county of 850,000 people. In 2015 the headquarters of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System also moved to Largo from its old site next to the Hyattsville Branch.
