About Lauderhill, Florida

Lauderhill is a city of 74,482 people in north-central Broward County. Its developer, Herbert Sadkin of All-State Properties, first planned to call it Sunnydale, but his friend William Safire thought that sounded like a Brooklyn neighborhood. When Sadkin objected that the land had no hills, Safire answered that Lauderdale probably had no dales either, and the name Lauderhill came out of that talk.

Andrew Geller designed the houses Sadkin built here, and they started as stock plans sold to the public through Macy's department store. In 1959 Geller had overseen the "Typical American House" that All-State Properties showed in Moscow, at the American National Exhibition. Sadkin first had about 200 of the homes built in Montauk, New York, during 1963 and 1964, then brought that success to Florida.

“The package deal included a 730- to 1,200-square-foot house on a 75-by-100-foot lot, as well as state-of-the art appliances, furniture, housewares and everything else a family would need for a weekend in the sun, including toothbrushes and toilet paper.”
Wikipedia
  • Jackie Gleason's golf classicThe Inverrary Country Club opened in 1970. Its East course hosted a PGA Tour event from 1972 through 1983, named the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic, and Gleason built his last home beside the course. Its first winner earned $52,000, over twice the Masters champion's purse that year, as Tom Weiskopf beat Jack Nicklaus by one stroke. Nicklaus won here a third straight year in 1978 with five birdies in a row to finish.
  • Cricket's first U.S. homeCentral Broward Park, built for $70 million at US 441 and Sunrise Boulevard, opened on November 9, 2007. India played its first American games there in 2016.
  • From snowbirds to the islandsInto the late 1980s and early 1990s, Lauderhill was mainly a place where Jewish families retired and snowbirds kept winter homes, above all in Inverrary. Since then it has become home mostly to Jamaican, West Indian and African American families, and by 2000 about a third of its people had been born abroad. Its sister cities are Suzano in Brazil and Chaguanas in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Broward Estates and St. GeorgeBoth neighborhoods were counted as census places in 2000, split off from the old Browardale census place, and Lauderhill annexed both before the 2010 census. People in Broward Estates often call their part of town "Parkway," for Parkway Middle School.
