About Lutherville, Maryland

Lutherville is a community of 6,835 people in Baltimore County, north of Baltimore along York Road. Its land had been part of Charles Ridgely's Hampton Estate until it was bought in 1851. The next year two Lutheran ministers, John Gottlieb Morris and Benjamin Kurtz, joined a Lutheran layman, Charles Augustus Morris, to found the village, and they named it for the German reformer Martin Luther.

John Gottlieb Morris laid out the village as a home for a women's college, the Lutherville Female Seminary, chartered in 1853, and he paid for the school by selling Lutherville's 118 lots. The college became the Maryland College for Women in 1895. A fire badly damaged it in 1911, but it was rebuilt and kept teaching until 1952, and its campus is now College Manor, an adult living community.

“The railroad brought city residents to Lutherville in the summer to escape the heat.”
Maryland Historical Trust, 1972
  • Lincoln rode through twiceLutherville grew up beside the Baltimore & Susquehanna Railroad, later the Northern Central Railway. Abraham Lincoln rode it through the village to give the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863, and his funeral train passed back through on April 21, 1865, bound for Springfield, Illinois. Pennsylvania Railroad passenger trains to Chicago, St. Louis and Buffalo used the line into the 1960s. Light rail runs on it today, and the old station on Railroad Avenue is now a home.
  • Oak Grove and John WatersThe founders gave the village streets the names of Lutheran clergymen, and two of those men are honored by Morris Avenue and Kurtz Avenue. John Gottlieb Morris built his own house, Oak Grove, on Morris Avenue in 1852. More than a century later, in the 1960s, the filmmaker John Waters spent his teenage years there with his family, and he made some of his first films at the house.
  • Churches and an octagon houseMorris started St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1856, and its stone sanctuary went up in 1898. Methodists built St. John's Church in 1869, and Episcopalians built the Church of the Holy Comforter in 1888. On Kurtz Avenue, another Lutheran minister, who was also the village postmaster, built an eight-sided house out of concrete in 1855.
