About Mays Chapel, Maryland

Mays Chapel is a community of 12,224 people in Baltimore County, west of Timonium across Interstate 83. Most of its ground was once a large farm called Mayfair. That farmland was sold to developers in the 1970s, and they built Mays Chapel Village, naming it for a church that had stood nearby since the middle of the 19th century.

The first chapel went up in 1854. It was a plain frame building with clapboard siding on the south side of today's Mays Chapel Road, close to a grove where the Rev. John Cornelius had preached. The congregation later outgrew it, so in 1902 a second chapel, built of stone in the Gothic style and topped with a belfry, gave the worshippers more space.

  • Mayfair's 1812 stone houseThe Mayfair land first belonged to Thomas Cockey Deye. Its stone house, built in 1812, still looks out over Greenpoint Road close to Avebury Road. Penelope Deye Owings Price lived there, and the 1850 county atlas shows her in the house under her later name, Mrs. Goodwin. Her heirs held the farm after she died in 1875, and in 1904 it finally left the family when Edward G. Cherbonnier conveyed it to Fairfax S. Landstreet.
  • The road named LandstreetThe old lane that ran from York Road to the farm became Landstreet Road. Interstate 83 later cut it off, but the lot under the 1812 house is still recorded with a Landstreet Road address.
  • Cockey's Tavern on the turnpikeWork on the Falls Turnpike Road began in 1808, and travelers paid tolls on it until 1905. Along it stood Cockey's Tavern, where members of the Cockey family kept both a tavern and a store. Guests were still staying there in 1877, the year John Cockey Jr. died, and the list made of his estate counted enough furnishings for six guest rooms, along with a parlor, dining room and kitchen.
