About Manchester, Connecticut

Manchester is a town of 59,713 people in Hartford County, just east of Hartford. The Podunk people camped here first, and colonists settled the land known as the Five Miles around 1673. For more than a century it belonged to Hartford. It was organized in 1772 as the Ecclesiastical Society of Orford, and when East Hartford broke away from Hartford in 1783, Orford became part of the new town.

Manchester was incorporated on its own in 1823 and took the name of Manchester, England. Its brooks and the Hockanum River turned the wheels of paper mills and, in 1794, one of the first cotton mills in Connecticut, at what became Union Village. In 1838 the Cheney family's silk business got under way, and it grew into the largest silk mill in the world, which earned Manchester the name Silk City.

“people came from afar to see the wonderful machine capable of making the fabulous amount of twelve pounds of good yarn in a single day.”
Memorial History of Hartford County, 1886
  • Lexington on local paperIn 1775 the Connecticut Courant reported the battle of Lexington on sheets made at the Watson and Ledyard mill on the Hockanum. Each week the mill sent eight thousand sheets to Hartford's printers, until someone set it on fire in 1778 and the state granted its owners a lottery so they could rebuild. Fire stayed the great danger, and by 1886 at least thirteen paper mills here had burned in forty years.
  • Glass paid for in gunpowderCaptain Richard Pitkin had supplied gunpowder to the Continental Army, and in return the state gave the Pitkins a 25-year monopoly on making glass. Their factory ran from 1783 to 1830 and was the first successful glassworks in Connecticut. It turned out mostly green glass, from demijohns to inkwells, and people came just to watch the glassblowers at work.
  • From Mount Nebo to Silk CityThe Cheney brothers began in 1836 with Mount Nebo, a small water-powered mill where half a dozen workers made sewing silk. They had also bet heavily on growing mulberry trees to feed silkworms, and when that fad collapsed they started over with raw silk imported from abroad. From 1855 they spun silk from waste that could not be reeled, in 1869 they built their own branch railroad, and by 1886 more than 1,500 people worked for them.
  • A five-sided post officeBuilt in 1931 of brick and limestone, the Main Street post office has a columned portico and an unusual five-sided plan, set on a slant to face the spot where Main and Center Streets meet. It handled the town's mail until 1991, and the US Post Office, Manchester Main joined the National Register in 1986.
  • Running since 1927The first Manchester Road Race was run in 1927. Every Thanksgiving morning, runners have covered its 4.748 miles, and the field now tops 10,000, Olympians among them. Only the Boston Marathon draws more runners in New England, and the race raises money for muscular dystrophy research and more than a dozen other charities.
