About Molino, Florida

Molino is a community of 1,296 people in Escambia County, Florida. Its name is the Spanish word for mill, and a mill already stood here before the United States took Florida from Spain in 1821. Settlers built the village about 1820, and by 1939 it was a small farm town with its own brick plants.

  • Sawmills as early as 1812Sawmills were already at work around Molino by 1812, while the land was still under Spain. The 1939 state guide judged that these mills most likely gave the village its Spanish name.
  • Bricks from local clayClay deposits lay in the ground near the village, and by 1939 Molino had several brick plants that made use of them.
  • 438 people in 1939The 1939 WPA guide to Florida described Molino as a village of 438 people, 27 feet above sea level, at the center of a farming region. Farmers around it raised large crops of corn and potatoes and sent them to market from the village.
