About Myrtle Grove, Florida
Myrtle Grove is a community of 17,224 people in Escambia County, up from 15,870 in 2010. It lies west of Pensacola, with Bellview to the north and Warrington to the south. Navy flight training began at nearby Corry Field in 1922, when it opened as an outlying landing field for Naval Air Station Pensacola.
In those first years the field was mostly sand, its buildings were crude, and ground crews had to keep cows from straying onto the landing area while planes were in the air. The Navy rebuilt it in 1932 with paved runways, hangars and a control tower, which put Corry among the earliest airfields in the United States to get a hard surface.
- A Medal of Honor nameThe field honors Lt. Cmdr. William M. Corry. He died after he tried to save a fellow crewman from an airplane that had caught fire, and he received the Medal of Honor after his death.
- From runways to classroomsPilots landed at Corry until the Navy closed the airfield in 1958. Corry Station then turned to technical training, teaching skills such as cryptology and electronic warfare.
- Home of Escambia High SchoolMyrtle Grove belongs to the Escambia County School District, which covers the whole county, and Escambia High School stands in the community.
