About Niwot, Colorado
Niwot is an unincorporated town of 4,306 people in Boulder County, on State Highway 119, midway between Boulder and Longmont. It takes its name from Chief Niwot, an Arapaho leader of the Boulder area in the nineteenth century, and in the Arapaho language his name means Left Hand.
The Colorado Central Railroad pushed its tracks northeast from Boulder, and two years later, in 1875, the town was platted on both sides of the line. At first the stores stood west of the tracks and the homes to the east. By the early 1900s most of the town had moved to the east side, and the buildings left on the west were either moved or lost to fire.
“The town of Niwot was named for Chief Niwot, an Arapaho leader, whose people were hunting and fishing along the Front Range when the first gold miners arrived in 1858.”
- Second Avenue since 1905John Nelson, a local carpenter, put up the first commercial building on Second Avenue in 1905. Most of the other shops on that first block were finished by 1915, and among them was the oldest Grange still operating in Colorado.
- Home of CrocsThe footwear company Crocs, Inc. kept its headquarters in Niwot for more than a decade, until June 2020.
- A film set in 2013In 2013 downtown Niwot served as the set for Dear Eleanor, a film produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, with Jessica Alba and Luke Wilson in the cast.
