About North Aurora, Illinois
North Aurora is a village of 18,261 people in Kane County, on the Fox River just north of Aurora. John Peter Schneider, an immigrant from Germany, moved here in 1834 and built a dam and a mill on the river, so the settlement was first known as Schneider's Mill or Schneider's Crossing. In time it took a new name from its place north of Aurora. The 1880 federal census was the first to call it the Village of North Aurora, and the village was formally incorporated in 1905.
- Railroads in the 1850sRail lines reached the town in the 1850s. They brought new jobs and tied North Aurora's industries and commuters to the Chicago area. The tracks through town belong to the former CB&Q route linking Aurora and West Chicago, which is the oldest line in today's BNSF system.
- Volunteer firemen since 1908Village Ordinance #21 set up a volunteer fire department in 1908. On July 7, 1958, a new name, North Aurora and Countryside Fire Protection District, let it serve land outside the village. Station #1 opened at State and Monroe in 1963. On November 1, 1993, the district made a fire chief its first full-time employee, adding two full-time firefighters a month later, and Station #2 opened on Tanner Road on March 16, 2007.
- Getaways on the Lincoln HighwayThe Lincoln Highway ran through North Aurora and made the trip easy for the many people looking for a day away at spots such as Exposition Park.
- A school named for the millerJohn Peter Schneider, whose mill and dam gave the settlement its first name, is remembered today at Schneider Elementary School, which stands east of the Fox River.
