About North El Monte, California

North El Monte is a census-designated place of 3,730 people in Los Angeles County, in the San Gabriel Valley between El Monte and Monrovia. That count was up from 3,723 in 2010. The community covers 0.4 square miles of land, and its children go to elementary schools run by the El Monte City School District and to high schools run by the El Monte Union High School District.

  • Almost Norwood VillageThe community grew so quickly in the late 1940s that local merchants and residents set out to give it a new name, hoping a separate identity would bring a post office of its own. In 1949 they cast 4,000 ballots, and Norwood Village won over both North El Monte and Rose Glen. The Postmaster objected to the winning name, so the community kept the name North El Monte.
  • A newspaper column of its ownBetween the two world wars, the Monrovia News-Post printed a regular column of North El Monte news. The paper described the community as a fast-growing area lying between El Monte and Monrovia.
