About Okeechobee, Florida

Okeechobee is a city of 5,254 people and the seat of Okeechobee County, just north of Lake Okeechobee, with Taylor Creek running through its east side. On December 25, 1837, about four miles southeast of today's city, Colonel Zachary Taylor led U.S. forces against Seminole warriors who were fighting removal to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi. It was one of the major battles of the Second Seminole War.

Coca-Cola bottled drinks in Okeechobee from 1918 until 1929. Damage from the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane was the main reason the plant closed, and that storm was the first Category 5 on record in the North Atlantic. By the 1930s the city had become the trading center for the country around it, sending hundreds of rail cars of winter vegetables to market each year.

“Frog farmers enclose bottom lands, ponds, or swamps; as frogs live on insects, breeders strew the runs with rotting meat to attract blowflies.”

  • A battlefield landmark since 1961The ground where Taylor's troops met the Seminoles, on US 98/US 441 near Taylor Creek, won National Historic Landmark status on July 4, 1961. A marker had been placed close by in 1939, and in 2006 the state purchased part of the land. Today it is a 145-acre park, where volunteers reenact the battle each year to raise money for it.
  • Bullfrogs for winter tablesFrog legs, called saddles, sold for high prices in winter, when wild frogs hibernate and are hard to catch, so farmers around Okeechobee raised them. Some planted flowers and shrubs or hung electric lights to bring in insects. A female could lay 10 to 30 thousand eggs a year, but frogs rarely went to market before age two. The city also had poultry farms and a catfish shipping plant.
  • 30,000 at the first festivalThe Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival began in 2016. It ran for several days and mixed many kinds of music, and in its first year it drew about 30,000 people to the city.
