About Taylor Creek, Florida
Taylor Creek is a community of 4,470 people in Okeechobee County, spread along the north shore of Lake Okeechobee. In October 1896 Peter and Louisiana Raulerson moved south from Fort Basinger and became its first Euro-American settlers. Long before they came, the ground here had been Seminole country, and it saw both a famous battle and a council that led to war.
“For decades in the first part of the 1800s, the Seminole Indians resisted forced resettlement to Oklahoma by staying in the Everglades, which covered much of southern Florida.”
- The Seminole battle planSeminole strategists picked and shaped the ground for the Battle of Okeechobee. Three leaders drew up the plans: Coacoochee, known as Wildcat; Abiaka, called Sam Jones; and Halpatter Tustenuggee, or Alligator. Following those plans, they cleared sawgrass along a path that drew the American soldiers into an opening with cypress trees on higher ground on three sides. Behind the trees, men and women reloaded guns, cared for the wounded and readied canoes for the withdrawal.
- A battle that made a presidentColonel Zachary Taylor ordered his men to charge the fortified Seminole position, then told the fight back home as a total victory. Those stories of success helped him reach the White House, where he served as the nation's 12th president. Today a small park in Taylor Creek remembers the battle.
- The council of 1855In 1855 Seminole leaders gathered at Taylor Creek to decide how their confederation should answer the growing pressure from the United States government. The meeting's answer was the start of the Third Seminole War.
