About Republic, Missouri
Republic developed beside an early railroad corridor in southwest Missouri after settlement shifted away from Little York. Incorporated in 1871, the city joined with Brookline through a resident-approved consolidation in 2005. Republic extends across Greene and Christian counties, with most of its area in Greene County, and counted 18,750 residents in the 2020 census.
- Patriotic NameWilliam O'Neal platted the town on January 1, 1879, choosing the name Republic to express his patriotic feeling.
- Railroad RootsA $1,000 public subscription funded a local depot, whose completion is credited with encouraging the community's later growth.
- Brookline ConsolidationRepublic and Brookline consolidated in 2005 after voters in both communities approved the change.
