About Ridgemark, California
Ridgemark is a community of 3,212 people in San Benito County, on the southeastern edge of Hollister. It is a private, gated neighborhood built around golf, with a little over 1,000 homes, and the land under it was once a turkey farm.
Developer Sonny Paullus began building here in the early 1970s, and the golf club came first. Houses followed the fairways, and the club grew twice over the next twenty years as the neighborhood filled in.
- Fairways on a turkey farmIn the early 1970s, developer Sonny Paullus turned an old turkey farm into Ridgemark's first golf course. Its 18 holes were the start of the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, and the homes of the community grew up around them.
- A second course in the 1980sThe club doubled in size in the mid 1980s, when another 18 holes were built, giving Ridgemark two full courses.
- Sold to its members in 1990In 1990 the club's stock was put up for sale, and most of the buyers were people who already belonged to it. A new company, RG&CC, Inc., then took over running the club.
