About Tres Pinos, California
Tres Pinos owed its existence to the railroad. The Southern Pacific first meant to build its main line through the San Benito Valley but chose Salinas instead. A branch from Gilroy ended at Tres Pinos. Teams hauled loads down from the mountains to the terminus, and cattle went by rail from its stock yards to San Francisco.
Novelist Frank Norris spent two months on a ranch near Tres Pinos, studying wheat farming on a large scale. What he saw there gave local color to his novel The Octopus. The country around town was known for hay, grain and thoroughbred stock ranches.
