About Rio Linda, California

Rio Linda is a community of 15,944 people in Sacramento County. Its land was once part of Rancho Del Paso, a Mexican land grant made in 1844. In 1910 a Fruit Land Company from Minneapolis bought 12,000 acres of the old grant, and in 1912 the company divided the tract into lots for sale.

The place had been a flag stop called Dry Creek Station on the Northern Electric Railroad. In 1913 it took the name Rio Linda, Spanish for "pretty river." Settlers came slowly at first, with two families by 1912, three more in 1913 and nine in 1914. By 1918 about 50 families lived here, most of them of Scandinavian or German descent.

  • Poultry country by 1920By 1920 farmers had shown that raising poultry could work on this land, and the area was advertised in several Eastern states all through the 1920s. In 1942 Rio Linda and neighboring Elverta formed an association, as the two towns grew known for the quality of their poultry.
  • A library since 1916Rio Linda's first library opened on September 26, 1916. Today's library also keeps a seed library, where neighbors share heirloom seeds suited to Sacramento weather.
  • From rail line to bike trailThe Northern Electric line later became the Sacramento Northern Railway, which ended commuter service in 1940 and turned to freight. Its abandoned right of way now carries the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail, a 10-mile paved path that starts in Rio Linda and runs to Downtown Sacramento.
  • Jeff Gordon's first trackThe Roy Hayer Memorial Racetrack, once called the Crackerjack Track, is known as the first track where Jeff Gordon ever raced. He went on to win four NASCAR championships.
  • Farm and Tractor DaysEach year Rio Linda celebrates farm life with Farm and Tractor Days at the Dry Creek Ranch House. The event reached its 23rd year in 2017.
